Week 2 - Artist - Tom Sachs & Johanna Fateman
This week I researched Tom Sachs and Johanna Fateman. Two artists, Tom Sachs and Johanna Fateman create and release Zine to the world. These two artists are different.
Tom Sachs
Artist Tom Sachs came to the world's attention in the 1990s when he presented the 'do it yourself' technique based on the concept of bricolage, which is made using all the tools of the world. Tom Sachs strongly advocates values and grounding ideas through "art" against the reluctance of fashion to combine with money through advertising and consumerism to replace the world's religions and spirits. Knolling is a concept that must be crossed over to understand the character of Tom Sachs. It is an 'organization' technique in which objects with obvious uses are grouped and arranged horizontally or at right angles.
When I saw the Zine he made, it felt
like a diary of everyday life. Looking at Space Program Mars, it seems that his
work was expressed using wood and carts in his studio. If you look at
Motorcycle Trip, you can get the feeling he recorded as he used his motorcycle
to get around the places he traveled. The title itself represents the content
of the work of art and expresses it well. Among Sachs' works, Mcdonald stood
out the most. This Zine is a very familiar space, and it is easy to find in the
vicinity. This Mcdonalds Zine shows you how food is made. He says it takes a
lot of hidden effort to make specific things. He has learned the lesson to live
in the future, recognizing that every moment is essential, not trivial and
unimportant.
Johanna Fateman
The next artist is Johanna Fateman.
When I saw her Zine, I felt a little scared. I saw her work 'Dear Diary, School
Sucks again this year.' Four crying girls are bizarrely expressed. The image
created by Fateman seems to be expressed as a heavy metal style painting. She
made a zine when she was going to school. Another of her works is Artaud-Mania,
with a dog face and two bones underneath it. I still don't quite understand
what she is trying to say and what she is trying to express while looking at
this picture. It seems to contain some complicated meanings.
Here's a comparison between the two
artists. Overall, I think Sachs is a little better in terms of expressive
ability and empathy. His works created works based on objects that can be
easily found around me and formed a broader consensus. Conversely, when I saw
Fateman's work, I couldn't easily understand her Zine. It was okay to express
the content of her childhood school, but the other works felt something creepy.
To understand her work, I think it will be helpful first to find out and
understand her background.
